Overview

A new home for a long-standing Shia centre in Durham Region, with space for worship, education, sport and family life under one roof.

Al-Mahdi Islamic Community Centre has grown from a single-use mosque into a multi-purpose centre that supports families, youth and education across Durham Region. Its new building is designed to keep up with that role.

As the centre refines its spaces and programs, community input helps it decide what to build for first.

What is being built

Prayer hall

A domed main hall with a minaret, plus separate prayer spaces.

Classrooms and learning rooms

Rooms for religious education, weekend school and adult learning.

Gymnasium

A full-size court for youth leagues and community sport.

Children’s room

A dedicated, colourful space for younger children.

Commercial kitchen

For community dinners, Muharram and Ramadan programs.

Rooftop courtyards and a field

Planted roof terraces and an outdoor sports field.
